Refugee Settlement

Our congregation is sponsoring a refugee family from Afghanistan, providing tutoring and other forms of assistance.

Martin's Day Camp

This camp is sponsored by area Methodist churches and is held for three days during the summer at a family farm in rural Hanover County. Young children from several congregations attend and enjoy fishing in a pond, tractor rides to the river, Bible stories, and crafts; teens and adults serve as volunteer helpers. First Mennonite Church helps to support this camp.

The next Martin’s Day Camp will be held on: TBD

Peace Camp

4 days during the summer at FMC. Peace emphasis. Done in conjunction with another church. Peace Camp is for rising K-5 graders and middle schoolers (grades 6-8).

The next Peace Camp will be: TBD

National Neighborhood Night Out

Since 2011, our congregation has participated in the National Neighborhood Night Out program. The program is held on the parking lot of our church. We are one of thirteen sites for residents of Chamberlayne Farms to gather and meet our neighbors. Snacks and games for the children are provided. We usually have representation from the Henrico County police, fire officials and county administrators.

The next night out will be: TBD

Blood Drive

Each year, usually in the month of August, our church hosts a blood drive through the local Red Cross.

In 2019 we collected 17 units, enough to help up to 51 people!

Our next blood drive is scheduled for: Saturday, August 27, 2020

CARITAS (Churches Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter)

First Mennonite provides shelter for homeless persons for one week a year during the winter months. Our guests are bused to the church each evening and are picked up after an early breakfast. We serve dinner in the evening. We also provide a brown bag lunch for each guest in the morning. Volunteers prepare meals and stay overnight to be available for the CARITAS staff person. Our church has supported this project for more than twenty years.

FMC will be hosting CARITAS from October 19-26, 2019

Lamb's Basket Food Collection

LAMB'S Basket aims to provide food to needy families in Henrico County. First Mennonite supports this food pantry by collecting non-perishable foods once monthly throughout the year, and each Sunday in November prior to Thanksgiving.

Garden City Church Plant

We are offering support to a new Mennonite congregation that is being planned for the Manchester area of Richmond.

Stop Hunger Now

Members of our congregation have cooperated with several other local churches to help with packaging non-perishable nutritional meals for distribution to organizations around the world for distribution to people who are experiencing famine.
