MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) is the relief and development arm of the greater Mennonite church. Congregations are made aware of need for material aid worldwide through this agency. First Mennonite has responded by donating supplies for school kits, health kits, and relief kits. Comforters are pieced, knotted and donated as well.

School Kits for MCC

As a peace church, FMC reaches out to pain and suffering in the world. One avenue is through MCC. During the month of August, school supplies are donated and bags sewn for school kits. Each kit includes 4 notebooks, 8 pencils, colored pencils, a ruler and an eraser. One Sunday after church, the youth of FMC gather for lunch and stuffing of the bags. The task of "stringing" the bags is taken on by even the youngest children who attend Sunday school. The bags are delivered to the 'Gift and Thrift" shop in Harrisonburg, and are taken to Pennsylvania before being shipped to refugee camps around the world! The person receiving the bags in Harrisonburg said daily bags arrive from various churches.

MDS (Mennonite Disaster Service) is the disaster relief agency of the worldwide Mennonite church. Following natural disasters, volunteer efforts are coordinated through this agency to provide help with rebuilding homes and communities. First Mennonite participates and provides support to the Eastern Virginia MDS unit by contributing money and providing volunteers when opportunities and needs arise within Virginia and elsewhere in the United States.
